The cruise line business in thriving and there is always room for more chefs on board to feed the millions of customers who cruise the world each year. One of the most sought-after delights of cruising is enjoying the wonderful gourmet meals that are served in beautiful surroundings. Many chefs today are just looking for any opportunity to continue their culinary careers at sea. They are leaving chef school and immediately applying for culinary jobs aboard a dream ship of their choice. The jobs are plentiful because each ship needs a fully-staffed kitchen to accommodate the many hungry people who cruise with them.
If you are a recent culinary school graduate or if you are just looking for a more exciting twist to your career, it might be wise for you to consider working on board a cruise liner. The more prestigious jobs include Executive Chef, a person who is in charge of the kitchen staff, administrative functions and following sanitation regulations. Another important job is Chef de Partie who is responsible for the preparation of gourmet food, creating new and tasteful recipes and displaying food in an appealing manner. A Sous Chef is the Executive Chef’s “right arm” and oversees the kitchen staff. All of these jobs generally require previous experience and/or graduation from a culinary school.
As a chef at sea you will get to show off your cooking skills to others and you will gain a world of experience while working with a huge number of guests. You will also get to tour the world and pick up cooking ideas from numerous ports of call. The job is also quite financially rewarding to the right people and can average up to $5000.00 per month. In addition, you will get free room and board while you’re working and any necessary or emergency medical care is usually covered. The downside is that you most likely will share cramped quarters with at least one other person and you may be required to work odd hours.
