Finding good chef training schools is not always an easy task.  It takes some diligence on your part to determine where you can receive the best training at a price you can afford.  At the very least, you will need a high school diploma to even apply for entry level jobs.  A sound background in business ethics and administration is highly recommended also.  Some school districts provide vocational training for career-minded students.  Some large corporations provide internships for qualified individuals.  In order to become qualified to be a professional or executive chef, you must have an excellent education and some hands-on experience.  To get to this level, you will need certification from a culinary arts school, an A.A. or B.A. degree or be a graduate of a high profile internship program.

Potential employers generally prefer applicants that have training from a trade school, college or professional organization.  Some of these programs require at least two years for completion and some of the specialized training lasts even longer.  To become a master chef, you will need approximately 12 years of experience plus an excellent culinary education.  With experience, your responsibilities will increase and you may even become an executive chef who oversees several kitchen staffs.

Most of the training you receive will be hands-on experience in high-tech kitchens by professional chefs.  You will spend very little time in an actual classroom setting and most of that time will involve learning the basics of business operation.  While you are in the kitchen, you will learn how to bake, broil and prepare a variety of foods.  You will also learn about kitchen equipment and how to take care of it.  In the classroom, you may learn such things as menu planning, food cost control, storage and safety of food, food purchasing and hotel/restaurant regulations and safety requirements.

As you contemplate your career as a chef, think about how you can find the perfect chef training school.  Make sure that you have the right credentials, including a high school diploma, to apply to the school of your choice.  Realize that you may need to ask for financial aid if necessary.  You might even want to apply to several schools and then compare their programs before selecting the best one for your career goals.
