ive almost finished my first year in culinary school at johnson and wales in charlotte, and am starting to realize the culinary industry might not be for me. long hours, stressful kitchens and little pay is not too appealing. my biggest passion in life is playing the guitar, and have considered majoring in music, but have already spent so much money and time at culinary school and dont know if music could offer me a reliable job. plus, i have no idea how to break it to my dad that i want to drop out. and on top of all this shit, i’ve met my girlfriend here who i might spend the rest of my life with; and dont know how to break it to her that i’d be leaving her and going to another college probably closer to home (alabama). its like im in the middle of making my girlfriend, my dad, and myself happy….. and helpful advice??
i don’t plan on being famous, just working in a studio or music recordings.
college is 20 thousand a year. thats why i’m hesitant about spending it if i don’t wanna be a chef. i’d have another year left

Absolutely do not drop out and I will tell you why. In the music scene, the probability of earning a living at it is about 1 in a hundred. You have to pay the rent while you are trying to break into the music scene and having a back-up profession will allow you to follow your dream and have food on the table — literally.

Question: What do you intend to use to pay for your girlfriend’s breakfast when she and you are together? The food industry is flexible once you have your degree. You can find work someplace that allows you to play your music too and if the music doesn’t take you there, you have something to fall back on. The food industry is better at the top than at the bottom.

I have experience in both Industries. My son and granddaughter are touring musicians and they are the exceptions to the rule, and branches of my family have a long history in the restaurant and hospitality industries — which, by the way, I didn’t enter. I took my degrees in other pursuits. I was an actor but i had a college degree in my back pocket and used it when acting led to great reviews but little money!

Should I get a degree before I go to culinary school? If so, what?

i suggest you post this in the foods and drink section, i think there are professionals there who might be able to help you :)
